SIBU: Mingchiang Tunhion Huay Sibu Clan (MTHSC) has successfully entered Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) for holding the largest gathering of senior citizens, aged 70 and above, at a leading hotel here yesterday.
In the presence of MBOR officials led by its Senior Record consultant Edwin Yeoh, a total of 1,443 senior citizens were present. Among them were 53 senior citizens aged 90 to 102.
The certificate of record entry was handed over by Yeoh to the chairman of MTHSC councillor Lau Khing Hung during the MTHSC’s filial piety for the elderly gathering event.
Among those present were Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Kuching Xing Weiping and Sibu Chinese paramount leader Temengong Datuk Vincent Lau Lee Ming.
Speaking to the media, Yeoh said this latest feat had smashed the previous record attained by Sibu Foochow Association more than a decade ago with a total number of 1,200 senior citizens.
He said it was not easy to gather such a large number of senior citizens at an event.
Describing the event as meaningful, he said even though they were old, they could still attend the event and enjoy food among friends and so forth.
The event’s organising chairman Hii Toh Ping said the association has submitted 1,443 names list to MBOR last month.
He said the MBOR official had verified the names list at the event and that had hit the target.
According to him, over 80 per cent of those on the name list are from Sibu, with the rest from Kapit, Sarikei, Kanowit, Song and Bintangor, all of whom are members of the association.
He was overjoyed that all those who have signed up for the event had managed to attend it and be part of this historical moment.
Meanwhile, all the attending senior citizens were also presented with gifts.
