KUCHING: It is only right for any law to be enforced, said Malaysian Press Institute chief executive officer Datuk Dr Chamil Wariya.

He was referring to Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah’s recent statement that all productions of films and recordings must apply for a licence before filming.

The minister pointed out that under the National Film Development Corporation (Finas) Act, film producers were required to inform the corporation via existing channels seven days prior to filming date, and this even included media meant for social media platforms.

“Film producers must apply for Film Production Licence and Film Shooting Certificate (SPP) regardless of whether they are mainstream media agencies or personal media which produce films on social media platforms or traditional channels,” he added.

“If the law is already written and passed in the parliament, we have no choice but to obey,” Chamil told New Sarawak Tribune on Thursday (July 23).

He pointed out the real question now was who and which party would be subjected to the law.

“In principle, such matter cannot be done like a blank check. They must deliberate on the matter, who and what is subjected to require a licence in film making,” he said.
