KUCHING: Changes in the leadership will destabilise the country as no one will be able to rule with absolute majority, said Prof Dr Jayum Jawan, a political scientist from Universiti Putra Malaysia.

“We have witnessed leaders being brought down, first the Pakatan Harapan (PH) under Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and now Perikatan Nasional (PN) under Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

“If another is to rise as prime minister, he or she and his or her coalition will face what Mahathir had encountered after 2018 and what Muhyiddin went through as seen now,” he added.

Commenting on where Sarawak should stand on the matter, he stated that the state was not in a very strong and strategic position to be able to assist in shaping how Malaysian national politics would forge ahead.

“The present political block of 18 Members of Parliament from Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) is not huge compared to others from Malayan-based parties such as Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), Democratic Action Party (DAP) and United Malays National Organisation (Umno),” he said.
