KOTA SAMARAHAN: The racial harmony and unity in Sarawak should be the role model for other states to practise mutual respect despite the different ethnic and religious backgrounds, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Senator P Waytha Moorthy.

Speaking when launching a National Unity Rally programme at the Civic Centre here yesterday, the minister added the collaborative efforts between the Neighbourhood Watch Committee (KRT), residential association and Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) would enhance social unity.

“We should learn on how Sarawakians could preserve their social harmony. For example, family members in Sarawak can live together, can sit, eat and celebrate other festivals despite their different religious backgrounds,” he said.

Highlighting the programme’s objective, Waytha said the establishment of the NGOs was vital to organise patrol night duty in the battle to fight criminal and social ills in surrounding neighbourhoods.

“Currently, there are 8,205 KRT nationwide and out of this, 1,036 KRT are in Sarawak.

On another note, Waytha urged social media users to be more responsible when uploading pictures or postings which could create social unrest or alarm.

“In the spirit of New Malaysia, everyone must learn to be responsible and to understand the cultures and lifestyle of the multiracial and multi-religious society in Malaysia,” he said.
