MIRI: Transport Minister Datuk Sri Lee Kim Shin will soon meet his national counterpart Anthony Loke on the upgrading of Miri Airport and the construction of another terminal building.

“We will continue to pursue the plan to build a new terminal building and multi-car parks which was discussed 10 years ago, and I hope the project can be reinstated under the unity government,” he said after chairing a meeting with the Malaysia Airports Berhad (MAB) at Miri Airport today (Dec 20).

Lee said his ministry will compile all the necessary information on the upgrading project and submit it to Putrajaya.

On another development, he said Miri Airport’s Apron Bay No. 2 is currently undergoing pavement rehabilitation.

The physical construction of the project will require Bay No. 2 to be closed for 10 months until August 2023.

“The pavement assessment, design and documentation started in November while the physical pavement rehabilitation work on 23 apron pavement slabs will start in February next year,” he told journalists.

Lee noted that since the construction of the pavement in 1985, it had never undergone any refurbishment.

“The condition of the pavement at Bay No. 2 has shown major distress such as cracks, loose stones and uneven surface, and this may potentially be hazardous to aircraft,” he said.

Lee stressed that Miri Airport needs to be upgraded to cater to increased flights.
