KUCHING: Members of the public applauded the decision to legalise the sales of fireworks and firecrackers but the safety aspect should also be prioritised for the sake of the consumer.

Recently, the Ministry of Home Affairs was tasked with coming up with regulations to licence the import and sales of firecrackers and fireworks, following the Cabinet’s decision to legalise their use.

The Cabinet has agreed to legalise the lighting up of firecrackers and fireworks, subject to approval by the authorities concerning import licences and duties to be paid.

In addition, this can also increase revenue for the country, at the same time shutting down syndicates smuggling firecrackers and fireworks.

While the public agree with the decision, however, there is also a need for standard operating procedures in the sales of the items to ensure that they are safe for use.

Some even suggested that the number of purchase of fireworks and firecrackers be limited to reduce the risks of danger pose to the user.

It is a great idea to legalise the sales of fireworks and firecrackers, at the same time the government can also earn revenue through taxation of the items. Knowing very well that most Malaysians play with fireworks and firecrackers during celebrations and seasonal festivities, this is another good initiative from the government to increase revenue.

In my opinion, I agree with the decision as long as there is a proper management system and precautions in managing the sales of firecrackers and fireworks. While it is an essential for festivities, the product itself still needs to meet the standards and requirements prior to selling it to consumers. I would suggest placing a limit in purchasing different types of firecrackers and fireworks as too much quantity can endanger the safety of the consumers.

I agree with the decision to legalise the sales of firecrackers and fireworks. Then again, to ensure safe sales, the regulations set by the ministry should include stringent quality control measures to ensure that firecrackers and fireworks are manufactured to meet specific safety standards, age restrictions, safe storage and handling and transportation guidelines to prevent accidents. Implementing these measures can help reduce the potential risks associated with the use of firecrackers and fireworks, and promote responsible and safe usage.

Yes, this is a good initiative by the government to legalise the sale of fireworks and firecrackers. However, I am worried that people will use it more excessively, not just during festivities, but even before or after celebrations, they still play with it. In addition, there will be excessive carbon emissions. Limit the order to, maybe, five boxes of fireworks.
