KUCHING: The public have been urged to refrain from speculating on the reopening of schools.

Sarawak Bumiputera Teachers Union (KGBS) president Ahmad Malie reminded them to let the authorities concerned —the Ministry of Education senior leadership or Senior Minister (Education) Mohd Radzi Md Jidin —to announce any decision.

He said that this was to ensure that teachers receive the same information from the same source.

He added that it was because the educational institution was large and involved a large number of students and was unlike other government institutions or agencies.

“As this school system involves a large number of students, KGBS also emphasises that the issue of student safety must be taken into account, although standard operating procedures (SOPs) are in place.

“As we know, the behavior of students is difficult to predict,” he said in a statement today.

Therefore, based on the facts stated, KGBS reiterated that it was up to the education authorities to determine when schools would be reopened.

Last Friday, Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian suggested that Form Four and Five classes could restart soon.

The Sarawak United People’s Party president, in a Facebook post, said he believed that Form Four and Five students would be able to adhere to certain ‘principles’ or SOPs aimed at breaking the chain of Covid-19 infection.

However, Dr Sim opined that it would be tremendously challenging for younger children such as primary school pupils to go back to school too soon.

“With all those principles (taken) into consideration, probably those in Form 4 and 5 will be able to comply and can start soon,” he said.
