KUCHING: Sarawak police are ever ready to complement the efforts of the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP) to curb the smuggling of subsidised goods if there is a request.

State Police Commissioner Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri gave this assurance when he said district police headquarters (IPDs) and the General Operations Force (GOF) were prepared to assist the ministry.

“We will help if the ministry needs our help. So far, we have not deployed our men as we are awaiting request from them,” he told journalists after officiating at the presentation of sacrificial meat at the Sarawak Contingent Police headquarters (IPK) yesterday (July 11).

On July 4, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said a thorough audit of manufacturers and packaging premises nationwide would be carried out to tackle the smuggling of subsidised cooking oil.

At the same time, joint raids will be conducted on factories along the borders to check on misappropriation.

The operation, involving 22 manufacturers and 305 repackaging operations, will see strict action against offenders, including revoking quotas and licenses.

“This measure is to ensure that the cooking oil subsidy allocation of RM4 billion channelled this year goes to ease the burden of Malaysians.

“The government has deployed enforcement personnel from the KPDNHEP, the police and the armed forces to raid packaging factories at the border to prevent irregularities,” Ismail said.

The comprehensive audit is aimed at deriving the actual amount of subsidised cooking oil produced and packaged in the country, as well as full information of the recipients.

Earlier, Azman presented sacrificial meat to a total of 62 recipients in conjunction with Hari Raya Qurban.

The recipients comprised 33 Muslim converts, eight widows and 21 civil servants from the police contingent.

Three cows and a goat were sacrificed. Two of the cows were donated by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Parliament and Law) Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and Tupong assemblyman Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman.

The sacrificial ceremony organised by the Sarawak Integrity and Standard Compliance Department, began as early as 7am at the IPK parking lot near Surau Darul Ibadah.

Also present were Sarawak Deputy Police Commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata, Sarawak Criminal Investigation Department chief SAC Lukas Aket and Sarawak Integrity and Standard Compliance Department chief ACP Roslan Tahir.
