KUCHING: Sarawakians have been told to make sacrifices at this year’s Gawai because of the need to curb the spread of Covid-19 in the state.
State Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said this year’s Gawai celebration would be different from those in the previous years as the state continues to battle Covid-19.
“I hope those celebrating Gawai will be observing in a modest manner. Avoid big gathering which can increase the chance for the virus to spread.
“At present, the Covid-19 cases are already stabilised and we hope to see it gone forever from this world,” he said in his Gawai video message.
He also said although this year’s Gawai may not be as grand as those in previous years, it is more important to note that the celebration is done in peaceful circumstances.
“Let’s hope we will live long enough to celebrate Gawai as usual in the coming years.
“To all the Dayak community, I wish everyone a Happy Gawai, Gayu guru gerai nyamai, lantang senang nguan menoa,” he said.
