SIBU: The Sarawak government, led by Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), has taken a bold step towards a new technology-based economy.

Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said this while officiating the state-level Nuzul Al-Quran at Masjid An-Nur here, yesterday.

“As the leader of the GPS Government, I have led the people to take a very daring move towards a new form of technology-based economy, having been granted such a large mandate by the people of Sarawak in the 12th State Election and supported by my Cabinet colleagues.

“Based on the current fields of knowledge, Sarawak, like other developed countries should use technology to boost its economy at the highest level.

“These days, scientists warn the public to protect the world from global warming and greenhouse gas emissions caused by human activity.

“We’ve regarded the world’s efforts to minimise global warming as a big opportunity under GPS.

“Thus, this is the starting point of the global race toward a low-carbon fuel-based economy, such as the generation of electricity from water power, especially hydro, or the use of a fuel that generates no smoke or emissions but water, such as hydrogen gas.

“I am confident that unless we take action now, Sarawak will be left behind,” he pointed out.

That is why, Abang Johari explained, Sarawak took the first step in 2017 when he succeeded the late Pehin Sri Adenan Satem as the chief minister.

He also proudly revealed that the state government’s efforts have been recognised by other countries as a result of their efforts.

“Other countries are now acknowledging our efforts and inviting me to share a bit of my experience with them as we explore collaboration prospects with other countries.

“I will deliver a talk in Singapore next week, and in early May, I will travel to Rotterdam, Netherlands, to speak about the new type of economy, which is our and the developed world’s goal,” he pointed out.

Speaking on the state-level Nuzul Al-Quran celebration, he said this year’s celebration, themed ‘Manhaj Rabbani Ummah Berkualiti’, brings forth the main message for all Muslims to promote unity, ummah advancement as well as unity in establishing a peaceful nation, especially among Muslims in Sarawak.

“May Allah SWT unify our hearts in this magnificent month of Ramadan with the benefits of the Nuzul Al-Quran.

“May all of our actions be accepted by Him and overflow with all blessings in our society and state, and may the Al-Quran be our guide to building a prosperous Sarawak by 2030 and beyond,” he said.

Also present were Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud and his wife Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Raghad Kurdi Taib as well as Abang Johari’s wife Puan Sri Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tuanku Bujang.
