PUSA: Local villagers were taken unaware when the carcass of ‘Bujang Saribas’, which was almost as long as the boat in which it was transported, was brought to Kampung Pusa, yesterday.

The crocodile was caught in an operation by a team of licensed crocodile hunters assisted by some villagers.

It was clear that when the hunters reached the village, most of the people were not aware of the crocodile culling operation in the area.

No matter, they were excited upon seeing a crocodile that was more than 10 feet long. Several young crocodiles were also landed and taken to the riverbank.

According to a villager, everyone rushed forward and crowded at the riverbank yesterday morning.

“We didn’t know what was going on. Then we saw a few crocodiles in a fishing boat and the biggest was almost as long as the boat,” he said, adding that stories of crocodiles being caught were rather rare over the past several years.

“It has been decades since the last time a crocodile was caught. We believe the number of crocodiles has increased due to the decline in river-related activities after our bridge was built.

“Villagers often see crocodiles on the banks of the river, especially when the water recedes. We always remind each other to be careful whenever we want to do something in or along the river.”

Based on a video which was shown to the villagers, all the crocodiles were killed with gunshots.
