KUCHING: Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) is determined to have more women elected representatives in the next state legislative assembly.

PBB vice-president Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the party always strived to remedy the gender imbalance in the state’s political sphere.

“We are always looking at fielding more women candidates in elections with the hope of getting them into decision-making positions.

“I think we are almost there now,” he said at a media conference on Wednesday.

He said the party would nominate women candidates to replace those who lost in the last state election.

“Of course, they (women) must meet the leadership criteria before we can forward their name to be a candidate representing the party.

“We will look into their background including their age, health background, financial background to identify whether they are in the bankrupt list.

“And most importantly is their personality. The person selected must have the passion to serve the people. There is no point to put a candidate who has no passion to serve the people,” he pointed out.
