SIBU: Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) has issued 127 compounds under its anti-littering campaign since July 1 this year.

SMC Chairman, Datuk Tiong Thai King said such action was necessary to keep the town clean.

“So far, 53 of them (offenders) have paid the compounds. As for those who fail to settle their compound within the stipulated period, court action will be taken against them,” he said at a full council meeting here recently.

From July 1, SMC increased the compound for littering to RM500 from RM20.

Any individual who comes across illegal dumping within the jurisdiction of SMC should tip off the council.

“We want the people to be our eyes and ears. If they discover any illegal dumping, snap a picture of the culprit or their car registration number so they can be traced and legal action taken,” Tiong said.

He also urged non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to come forward to assist the council in educating the public on civic-consciousness.
