Local claims trial to assaulting American woman

KUCHING: A 25-year-old local man today claimed trial to assaulting a foreign woman on June 22.

Chua Aik Khin pleaded not guilty before Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Ali.

He was charged under Section 354 of the Penal Code which provides for assault or use of criminal force with intent to outrage modesty.

He stands accused of hitting the back of a 40-year-old American woman on the stairs of a homestay in Jalan Bukit Mata, at about 7.45pm that day.

If convicted, he can be sentenced to imprisonment of up to ten years or a fine or whipping.

The court released him on a bail of RM2,000 with one local surety and fixed Aug 8 for case management.

Prosecuting Officer Inspector Mohd Adzmei Ahmad appeared for the prosecution while the accused was represented by lawyer Lim Lian Kee.
