KUCHING: Local councils play a crucial role in raising the living standards for residents, said Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng.

He said the council’s responsibilities extend beyond mere cleanliness of the city, the broader objective is to foster community prosperity and well-being.

“While ensuring cleanliness is important, our role goes far beyond that. We are committed to elevating the standards of living within our community.

“As the city’s mayor, I am dedicated to promote happiness and improve the quality of life for all residents,” he said.

He said this during the opening ceremony of the inaugural Woo Woo Market held at the Dayak Bidayuh National Association Hall here yesterday (May 4).

Wee added that Woo Woo Market has attracted 47 vendors to provide a platform for local entrepreneurs to foster a sense of community among residents of diverse backgrounds.

“I am proud to see individuals from various ethnicities coming together to showcase their products and talents. This inclusivity reflects the essence of our state.

“Platforms like Woo Woo Market have become instrumental in providing visibility to emerging entrepreneurs and their innovative products,” he added.

Meanwhile, Wee expressed optimism about Sarawak’s economic prospects, citing its ranking as third in the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) index.

“We have witnessed firsthand the ingenuity and creativity of our local vendors at the Woo Woo Market. By harnessing the potential of small-scale enterprises, we aim to propel Sarawak to the forefront of the nation’s economic landscape,” he said.

Additionally, Wee reiterated the council’s commitment to serving the community and urged residents to collaborate in building a brighter future for Kuching.

“Let’s build this city together because it is your city, my city, our city,” he said.
