KUALA LUMPUR: The skills of local talents specialising in Visual Effects (VFX), especially in computer-generated imagery (CGI) technology, are comparable to those in developed countries.

VFX expert Asrulhisham Ahmad said this was evident when several international companies used Malaysian talents to produce CGI for their movies.

“Films such as ‘Life of Pi’, ‘X-Men: First Class’ and ‘Snow White’, I think easily there were 80 Malaysians working on the special effects in those films. There is a Hollywood company with an office in Cyberjaya and use local talents to work in Hollywood movies,” he said while discussing the topic “Visual Effects: Invasion of Privacy?” in the Upsound programme produced by the Bernama News Channel.

Asked on the quality of VFX in local movies that were said to be lagging behind when compared to those produced in Hollywood, he explained that the main factor was the financial constraints or funds allocated for the production of a movie.

“The main problem is financial constraint, rather than the skills factor,” he added.

Asrulhisham also pointed out that VFX was not something that was impossible to be applied in the production of a movie or video, but it would involve various preparations before using certain techniques in the editing process. – Bernama
