MIRI: Floodwaters made its way into Rumah Long Bemang longhouse in upper Baram, affecting 600 residents from 100 households, due to continuous rainfall since Monday.

The incessant rain has caused the water level of Baram river to overflow and inundate the village.

Miri Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Zone 6 chief Supt Law Poh Kiong today said the flood showed an increasing trend.

“The water level started to rise and two blocks of the longhouse — Haleluyah and Hosana — were inundated with 0.6 feet and 0.4 feet of water respectively since 2am today,” he said.

Rumah Long Bemang, dubbed the longest longhouse in the northern region, has four blocks — Haleluyah, Hosana, Maranata and Calvary.

The residents of the longhouse have been warned to be on alert as the water level continues to rise.

As at press time, Bomba did not initiate any evacuation operations in the area as the situation is still under control.
