Longhouse blaze leaves 19 homeless

SIBU: Five units of 7-door longhouse Rumah Norliza, Sungai Menyen here were destroyed in a fire this afternoon.

Fire and Rescue Department chief Janggan Muling in a statement today said that upon receiving an alert call at 1.20 pm, two-team of firefighters were deployed to the scene.

“A team comprising members from the Sibujaya Fire and Rescue Station together with a team from BBP Kanowit rushed to the location,” he said.

According to Janggan, the fire involved a non-permanent structured house with an estimated area of 50 ‘x 20’.

“Five houses were 100 per cent burnt during the fire leaving 19 occupants homeless, while another two houses nearby were burned 10 per cent involving six occupants,” he said.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire has yet to be ascertained as investigations are still ongoing.
