Longhouse fire leaves 88 people homeless

BINTULU: A fire razed a longhouse, Rh Elwin Ugan, at Bukit Ugan Baru, Sg Binyu, Sebaoh near here yesterday, leaving 88 people from 10 families homeless.

The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) operations centre said the blaze occurred around 1am, and that at the time, no emergency call was made.

Bintulu Bomba chief Christus Buson first received word of the fire through photos and a WhatsApp video.

He contacted Sebauh police to confirm whether the viral post was fake or not.

Sebauh police went to the location and confirmed the incident.

Firefighters from Bintulu were dispatched and when they arrived, they discovered that the 10-door longhouse had burnt to the ground.

No one was injured in the blaze. The location of the fire could only be accessed via river.
