Longhouse fire victims get assistance

KUCHING: The fire victims of a longhouse at Kampung Segubang, Batu Kawa here heaved a sigh of relief after receiving welfare assistance.

The assistance, given by the state Social Welfare Department (JKM), is in the form of money, kitchen items, bedding, daily clothes and school clothes. The distribution of items took place at Dewan SM Min Lit, Batu Kawa today (Aug 17).

Maria

One of the fire victims, Maria Enggu, 34, expressed her gratitude towards the government and the non-governmental organisation (NGO). 

“I am very thankful. My family and I are currently staying in a temporary shelter,” she said.

Imbong

Imbong Jiram, 43, also extended her thanks to the government and all the NGOs involved in the coordination of the aid distribution.

“The assistance has eased our burdens after we lost our homes to the fire,” she said.

The fire victims are now at a temporary shelter at Kampung Segubang. They will be moving to the HDC Flat at Batu Gong tomorrow (Aug 18).

Awie

Another victim, Awie Agau, 54, said he was very satisfied with the facilities provided at SM Min Lit Batu Kawa here.

“The facilities provided for us here are good and comfortable,” he said.

Rosie

Rosie Melat Berribun, 24, said the longhouse caught fire on Aug 10, affecting 20 of its doors and 22 families were left homeless.

The fire victims expressed their joy and are looking forward to their new home and hope that the new longhouse can be built as soon as possible for the comfort of their families.
