KUCHING: Food supplies were distributed to Rh Helena in Tanjung Penasu, Sibu recently.
Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) Bawang Assan Youth chief Joshua Ting Fu Ying said the sudden lockdown imposed on the longhouse following a Covid-19 outbreak gave folk little time to go out and get essential supplies.
“Yesterday, Rh Helena in Tanjung Penasu was locked down because 14 people tested positive for Covid-19.
“One of the longhouse residents, who is a former councillor, immediately called me and told me that due to the sudden blockade, the residents did not have time to purchase supplies so there is a shortage.”
Ting said the supplies included instant noodles, instant drinks, biscuits, sugar and disinfectants, among others, were dropped off at the longhouse on Thursday morning (Jan 21).
“At the same time, we have also solved the problem of insufficient Internet data for 12 students in the longhouse who needed to take online classes.
“We hope that their schoolwork will not be affected during the blockade.”
Ting also hoped that Sibu folk would continue to be vigilant and follow standard operating procedures outlined by the authorities.
Rh Helena has been under lockdown since late Wednesday evening after 14 cases were reported.
Senator Robert Lau, as per online portal DayakDaily, said this was to avoid any movement and spread of the virus to the other nine longhouses in the vicinity.
“There are nine other longhouses along the road although they are not nearby. So, we do not want them to move around there.”
