SIBU: A family of four managed to get out to safety after their house in Kampung Hilir here was hit by loose barges yesterday.

Sibu district police chief ACP Stanley Jonathan Ringgit said the 6.45am incident involved three barges that were initially moored in Ulu Lanang and later drifted to Sungai Antu area where they eventually crashed into the house.

He said the ropes that were used to tie the barges have snapped, thus causing them to drift away without control.

“The barges hit the back and kitchen of the house.

“My men were deployed to the scene after being informed of the incident by the public,” he said.

He added that the 45-year-old mother and her three children, aged between seven and 11, managed to get out of their house on time.

Stanley also said the back of the house was badly damaged.
