SIBU: A concrete drain project will be built at Lorong Hose here to overcome flash floods in the area.

Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng Jin Ek said the drain, which is about 82 metres long and a 9.5-metre culvert will connect the existing drain to the main drain at Jalan Brooke Drive.

“The problem with the drain here is that it is not connected to the main drain at Jalan Brooke Drive (closer to the main drain). At the moment, there is only the main drain at the other side.

“So, during heavy rain, the drain is unable to discharge water fast enough thus causing flash floods,” he said when met by reporters after the handover of the proposed project to the contractor yesterday (Feb 1).

Chieng noted that the project, which will start soon, is part of the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) in his constituency costing RM111,930.16.

He also said the project, which will benefit around 50 families in the area, will take about four months to complete.

“This is a long-overdue project and we must resolve the issue. The flood could go up as high as two feet or three feet.

“This should not be happening because the area is not a low-lying area,” he said.
