Lorry driver gets fine for handphone theft

KUCHING: A lorry driver was fined RM1,300 or a month’s imprisonment by the Magistrate’s Court here on Monday (Jan 9) for stealing and disposing a smartphone belonging to a primary school teacher last year.

Bahtrim Haimi, 25, pleaded guilty to the charge read out by an interpreter before Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Ali.

He was charged with stealing the Xiaomi smartphone belonging to a 25-year-old male victim and selling it at a telecommunications shop in Jalan Semarak, Matang, at around noon, November 22 last year.

He was charged under Section 414 of the Penal Code which carries a prison sentence of up to seven years or fine or both, if convicted.

According to the facts of the case, the victim realised that his smartphone, which was placed on the table in the teacher’s room, had been stolen by an unknown person around 3.15 pm on Nov 3, 2022.

He then made a police report which led to the arrest of Bahtrim on January 3.
