JULAU: A man was killed and another lightly injured when the lorry they were travelling in skidded and plunged into a ravine at Jalan Merurun here today (Aug 17).

In the 11.30pm incident, Raddy Gudet, 37, died on the spot while Boniface Beruang Tinggom, 24, suffered injuries to his head and body.

Sarawak Traffic Investigation and Enforcement chief, Supt Alexson Naga Chabu said the lorry, which was carrying a load of bricks, went out of control due to brake failure and fell into a 10-metre deep ravine leading to a river.

“As a result of the accident, Raddy died at the scene and Boniface suffered minor injuries,” he said today.

Alexson said the case was being investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Meanwhile, Bintangor Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) chief, Nicholas Belulin said Boniface had managed to get out on his own before the arrival of firefighters. He  was sent to Ng Sekalong Health Clinic here by the public.

“Raddy, who was the driver, was pinned in his seat. He was successfully extricated by rescuers using special equipment at 3.45pm.

“The victim was confirmed dead by paramedics at the scene and his body was handed over to the police for further action,” he added.
