Jilted man slashes himself following messy break-up

KUCHING: A jilted lover failed in his bid to end his own life at a flat in Ban Hock Road here.

The apparent suicide attempt by the 35-year-old man was foiled by firefighters from the Padungan fire station who were summoned to the scene upon receiving the distress call.

Deputy police chief Supt Ismail Mahmood, when contacted, confirmed the case and said that police were alerted by firefighters at 9.45pm on Wednesday about the incident.

He pointed out that the suspect was picked up by police at 2.10pm yesterday for his statement to be recorded and to facilitate police investigation under Section 309 of the Penal Code.

Initial investigation revealed that the cause was due to personal relationship trouble after the man and his girlfriend broke up after a two-year relationship a week ago,” he said.

“The suspect met his ex-girlfriend at the flat to make amends but was ignored by his ex-girlfriend, causing him to grab a kitchen knife and slash his left hand four times. He was left with a three-inch wound.”

Following the incident, the ex-girlfriend contacted the authorities (firefighters and police) for assistance.

“The suspect was later brought to the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) for treatment,” Supt Ismail said, adding that police visited the scene and recorded a statement from the ex-girlfriend.

Meanwhile, a spokesman from the Fire and Rescue Department said a team of firefighters from Padungan were deployed to the scene upon receiving the distress call at 9.38pm.

Swift action by the firefighters saved the man from inflicting further harm on himself.

The man was later given medical treatment by the EMRS unit before being handed over to the police for further action.
