SIBU: Parts of Jalan Sungai Assan and Jalan Nanga Assan which were previously flooded during the rainy and high tide seasons are being upgraded by the Sibu Rural District Council.

The council’s deputy chairman Wong Ching Yong told reporters this today (April 28).

However, he said that due to the limited allocation at the moment, the council could only upgrade some parts of the two roads.

“On Tuesday, I went to the locations with the contractors and engineers.

“In the past, the two roads were often flooded and submerged in water as high as three to five feet,” he explained.

The chairman of SUPP Dudong Branch said every time it rained and during high tides, the two roads were like rivers.

He said the residents of Jalan Sungai Assan had to use boats to go to work or buy necessities.

Wong added that in October last year, Tuai Rumah Marta Lu and other longhouse chiefs met him to seek help in upgrading the two roads so that the frequent flood problems could be resolved.

“After surveying the location in November 2020, I submitted an application to upgrade the level of Jalan Sungai Assan and Jalan Nanga Assan to the council.

“In January this year, the council approved the application that I had submitted and work to upgrade the roads started last Monday,” he added.

According to the council’s Engineering Division’s plan, he said, the two roads would be several feet higher after the upgrading.
