KUCHING: To date, the response rate of Malaysians registering for the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme is still underwhelming.

In saying so Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, stressed that Malaysians should not hesitate, but immediately join the registration queues.

“Only 5.17 million or 21 percent have registered via MySejahtera, as of Mar 10, and only 345,646 have secured appointment. To date, 223,923 have taken the vaccine,” he said.

As such, he urged Malaysians to quickly register for the programme in doing their part to curb the pandemic and subsequently enable the nation to focus on the recovery process. He added that it was crucial for Malaysians to get themselves vaccinated to effectively flatten the infectivity curve.

He also reminded the people not to read, listen to, or believe rumours and false reporting widely circulated via social media, aimed at creating unnecessary fear and confusion pertaining to the vaccine.

“The Covid-19 pandemic has adversely affected us in many aspects.

“It has literally immobilised us, following the movement restriction orders imposed, and because of this, our economy too has suffered.

“It was estimated that Malaysia suffered RM2.4 billion losses per day during the first movement control order (MCO) and RM300 million daily during the second MCO this year.

“We cannot be in lockdown forever. That is why it is crucial for everyone to take the vaccine so that we can fully open up businesses and can execute the various recovery programmes to aid the economy,” he said during a Malaysia Prihatin (Malaysia Cares) programme at Kampung Buntal Community Centre, here today.

Malaysia Prihatin is a government-led nationwide programme to spread awareness, aspirations, and hopes of all Malaysians in combating the Covid-19 pandemic and to educate the public on the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme.

Themed ‘Protect Yourself, Protect All’, the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme is implemented in three phases, with Phase 1 from February to April this year for frontliners involving 500,000 people.

Phase 2 from April to August is aimed at senior citizens aged 60 and above, high risk groups, and those with disabilities. This involves 9.4 million people, while Phase 3 from May this year to February next year will cover the population aged 18 and above (both Malaysians and non-citizens) with a target of over 13.7 million people.

At the event, Wan Junaidi, who is also Santubong MP, presented RM200,000 worth of donations under the Yayasan Bank Rakyat ‘Back to School’ programme.

The donations, involving 1,000 students from Tanjung Datu, Pantai Damai, and Demak Laut, were presented to school representatives and local leaders.

He also presented RM24,100 medical assistance fund to 41 recipients living in the Santubong constituency.

In addition, flood survivors of the three state constituencies under Santubong affected by the floods in January also received assistance totalling RM150,000 through the Yayasan Bank Rakyat CSR programme.
