MIRI: A machete-wielding man ran amok damaging two vehicles while threatening to attack a policeman at Lutong police station on Friday (July 16).

In the 3.15pm incident, a 29 year-old suspect reportedly launched a frantic attack outside the police station.

Swift action by policemen at the station saved people who had queued outside the station for inter district travel permits from being injured in the incident.

The policemen ushered them inside the station to safety.

Two vehicles – a motorcycle and a Honda Civic car however were damaged by the amok before he fled the scene on a bicycle.

Police detained the suspect some three hours later at a roadside along Jalan Pantai here for questioning.

Miri police chief ACP Hakemal Hawari said the suspect had resisted arrest and assaulted the law enforcement officers when a team of CID officers approached to detain him.

They eventually managed to subdue the suspect and brought him to the central police station for questioning.

A policeman was reportedly injured in the incident and was treated as an outpatient at Miri Hospital.

During the arrest, police also seized a 50cm long parang from the suspect.
