KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said he was deeply saddened over the death of Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim at the National Heart Institute (IJN) Monday night and extended his condolences to the fireman’s family.

“Innalillahi wainna ilaihi rajiun. I’m deeply saddened by the news. May his soul be placed among the pious.

“My condolences to the family for the passing of Muhammad Adib.  Al-Fatihah,” Dr Mahathir  tweeted.

Muhammad Adib, 24, who was seriously injured in the Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman Temple fracas on Nov 27, succumbed to his injuries at the IJN Monday night.

He breathed his last at 9.41 pm with his family by his side.

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah  Wan Ismail, while extending her condolences to Muhammad Adib’s family, also described the firefighter as a hero.

“He was truly a hero. My deepest condolences go out to his parents, and immediate family members, including his fiancee. May his soul receive Allah’s blessings and be placed among the righteous,” she said in a statement.

Dr Wan Azizah also said it was important that all Malaysians stand together now in solidarity against the crime that had led to the death of Muhammad Adib.

“We must remember that this was not a religious or racial crime but a criminal act committed by heartless human beings.

“We are all saddened at this heinous crime but let the due process of law run its course. Rest assured, this crime will not go unpunished,” she added.

 Condolences from Cabinet ministers were also pouring in after the death of Muhammad Adib  Monday night. Among them were from Finance Minister Lim Guan  Eng, Defence Minister Mohamad Sabu, Federal Territories Minister Khalid Abdul Samad, Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik and Foreign Minister Datuk  Saifuddin Abdullah.

Also received were from Human Resources Minister  M. Kula Segaran, Water, Land and Natural Resources Minister Dr A. Xavier Jayakumar and Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman.

On Sunday, the IJN in a statement explained that Muhammad Adib had suffered  progressive deterioration of his lung function and a thorough assessment  showed signs of  consolidation and hardening of the lung tissue, thus making gas exchange ineffective.
