BAU: Four women were arrested for playing mahjong in a house here, today (Feb 13).

Yes, it may sound weird. If you and your friends and family play mahjong — a popular Chinese tile-based game — and there is money at stake, it’s a form of gambling and it’s is considered illegal in Malaysia.

In an early morning operation codenamed Ops Limau, a Bau CID team carried out a raid on an unnumbered house at Jalan Paku, around 12.15am.

District police chief DSP Poge Nyaon, who confirmed the arrest, said four women aged between 36 and 60, were caught playing mahjong inside the house.

“We seized a mahjong table, chairs, eight dices and some cash. The suspects were taken to the Bau police headquarters for further action,” he said.

Police said the women do not have any past records. The case is being investigated under Section 6(1) of the Common Gaming House Act 1953.

If found guilty, the offenders can be fined not more than RM5,000, or face imprisonment of not more than six months, or both.
