KUCHING : Road naming in Seoul, a start of two friendship cities cementing the way for future cultural, education and public health impact on Sarawak.

Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian said that the trip to South Korea’s capital city was to maintain the networking relationship with the new mayor and establish a commitment between South Korea and the State government.

Recently, Dr Sim who is also Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government, made a trip to South Korea with Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng to mark the 10th anniversary since Guro and Kuching signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) as a friendship city in 2012.

Dr.Sim added that this is an opportunity that must not be done for the sake of signing an MoU as a friendship city but to continue to reinforce the mutual ties.

“Even with a change of mayor who just started two months ago, we as the state government are supporting them.

“It is not about the two mayors previously and the chemistry they have developed, this is beyond that”, he added.

He was speaking to the reporters after attending the 82nd Installation of Rotary Club of Kuching President and Board of Directors 2022-2023 at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) on Saturday night (Sept 24) as the guest of honour.

Dr Sim also explained that he visited Seoul’s fire and rescue department which has been quite active and has provided engines to the State government.

“More importantly is the training, the specialised training to our firemen which is rather unique, normally the fire department in Seoul is managed by the city government and not by the ministry.

“We have much to learn from the fire department there, they have their own helicopter, their own speedboats and about 8,000 firemen in Seoul and they run their own ambulance instead of the hospital”, he said.

He also emphasised the importance of providing opportunities for the firemen in Kuching to visit Seoul in the context of the two friendship cities.

“We are exploring the technical schools in Seoul as well, and looking into aspects such as cultural and public health which can benefit the local people”, he added.
