Major increase in accident cases this year

KUCHING: The number of road accident cases in Sarawak increased drastically from January to March this year, with a difference of 667 cases compared to the same period last year.

In a press conference today, State Police Commissioner Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri said a total of 4,253 accident cases were recorded this year, up 18.6 per cent over last year’s 3,586 cases.

“In addition, fatal accidents have also increased by eight cases from 64 cases last year to 72 cases this year.

“However, the number of severe accidents fell by one case, from 41 last year to 40 this year,” he said after launching the 18th Op Selamat in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri in front of Boulevard Shopping Mall here, today.

He added, minor accidents decreased by six cases from 81 in 2021 to 75 this year.

He pointed out that for damaged accident cases, they have recorded a total of 4,804 this year, an increase of 684 cases compared to last year’s 3,400 in the first three-month period.

Regarding accident cases during ‘Op Selamat’ in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri in previous years, Azman said there were a total of 751 cases recorded in the 15th edition of ‘Op Selamat’ in 2019.

It showed an increase of 71 cases compared to 680 cases in the 13th edition of ‘Op Selamat’ in 2018.

“As for fatal accidents, the 15th edition of ‘Op Selamat’ in 2019 documented a total of 13 cases involving 15 deaths.

“Meanwhile in 2018, there were 10 fatal accident cases involving 10 deaths in the 13th edition of ‘Op Selamat’,” he pointed out.
