TEBEDU: The Greater Kuching Development Coordination Agency (GKDCA) is spearheading plans for new streetlight installations in Tebedu and Kedup constituencies to improve road safety.

Kedup assemblyman, Martin Ben, said that the main goal is to identify the best spots for streetlights along Jalan Mongkos, Terbat, Mapu, and Daha, covering a 32-kilometer stretch. The GKDCA is also carefully reviewing the overall expenses for this project.

Detailing the cost-sharing plan, Martin said that the expense for the lights along Mongkos and Terbat will be shared between himself, Tebedu assemblyman Dr. Simon Sinang Bada, and the GKDCA.

“I will also cover the costs for lights from Terbat to Mapu. However, the stretch from Mapu to Daha will be managed by the Tebedu assemblyman,” he said after a working visit with GKDCA along the mentioned roads recently.

Meanwhile, GKDCA chief executive officer Datuk Ik Pahon Joyik said that the installation will begin next year once detailed plans are received from all parties involved, including SESCO Berhad (SESCO), the Public Works Department (PWD) Serian, and the Serian District Council (MDS).

Ik Pahon emphasised the importance of lighting up areas like main village entrances, tricky bends, and spots known for accidents. “Our goal is to ensure safer roads, particularly during challenging conditions like night time and heavy rains,” he added.

Also present were Serian Division Acting Resident Abdul Khalid Manap, Tebedu assemblyman representative Asem Linkin, and the SEB (Kuching Outstation) Manager Patrick Andra Tawang.
