KUCHING: The setting up of the Penggerak Komuniti Negara (PKN) is politically motivated, said Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) vice-president Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

He also questioned the establishment of PKN Wilayah Sarawak and its parliamentary committees here with each unit based on a parliamentary boundary.

“Why doesn’t it follow our 12 Divisional administrative boundaries?” he asked.

Karim was commenting on the establishment of 16 parliamentary committees under the purview of PKN Wilayah Sarawak, purportedly pursuant to a National Community Policy launched by the Federal Housing and Local Government Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin on Feb 17, 2019.

“Personally, I don’t see the need for PKN. I am not sure what was in Zuraida’s head when she set up this PKN. But what I can say is that it is all politically motivated. What is in Zuraida’s head is just politics, politics politics,” Karim said.

He pointed that it was morally and ethically wrong for Zuraida to set up the PKN as a non-governmental organisation (NGO) because public funds were used to fund it.

“What makes it even more questionable is that the whole lineup of PKN Sarawak comprises former Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Sarawak members who are Datuk Seri Mohammed Azmin Ali and Zuraida’s supporters,” he said.

Karim, who is also Tourism, Arts, Culture Minister as well as Youth and Sports Minister, said ministries and agencies under his two ministries would not be involved with PKN Sarawak.

“With due respect to the head of PKN Sarawak who is a close family friend, we (the ministries and agencies) will not have any cooperation with PKN Sarawak.

“This is because I see this PKN is an attempt by Malayan leaders to spread their ideology and wings to Sarawak vis NGOs,” he said.

It was reported that there are now 16 PKN parliamentary committees, namely in Petra Jaya, Santubong, Kota Samarahan, Batang Sadong, Stampin, Miri, Lubok Antu, Bintulu, Tanjong Manis, Kapit, Sarikei, Betong, Puncak Borneo, Saratok, Sibu and Igan.

PKN Wilayah Sarawak information chief Leslley Kalom said it planned to establish 15 more new committees in the future.
