Man accused of sexually assaulting niece


MIRI: A 39-year-old local man was detained by the police on Sunday after he allegedly sexually assaulted his own niece.

The suspect was picked up from a house at Taman Desa Senadin by a Miri Criminal Investigation Department (CID) team around 6.40 pm following a report lodged by the 15-year -old victim.

Miri deputy police chief Supt Sabri Zainol, when contacted on Monday, confirmed the arrest.

In the incident, which occurred last Wednesday afternoon (May 26) around 2.15 pm, the suspect allegedly unzipped his pants and exposed his private parts to his niece.

The victim, a school student, was in her bedroom when her uncle suddenly barged in.

The suspect also tried to drag the victim into the toilet but she managed to push him away before fleeing the room while screaming for help.

It was understood that the house belonged to the victim’s grandmother.

The case is being investigated under Section 15(a)(i) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017.
