SIBU: A 37-year-old man was detained for possessing two homemade shotguns or bekakok with 18 cartridges and body parts of wild animals in a house at Jalan Ding Lik Kong here.

Sibu district police chief ACP Stanley Jonathan Ringgit said the suspect, from Belaga, was a fish and wildlife seller.

According to him, the suspect was arrested on September 11 during a raid dubbed Ops Khazanah, conducted by the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC), police and 10th Battalion of the General Operations Force (GOF).

“At about 7.30pm, police personnel made an arrest and seized two homemade shotguns and 18 rounds of ammunition,” he said in a statement on Monday (Sept 14).

The suspect, he said, had been detained at another location.

“The suspect then led the raiding team to his house. A thorough inspection found various parts of an animal, believed to be of wildlife, stored in a freezer, in a store of the house.

“Weapons and ammunition were also found. The house is rented, and is occupied by the suspect with his wife and children,” he added.

Stanley said the suspect admitted that the bekakok and ammunition were his and did not have a valid licence for it.

“The suspect also revealed that it was used for hunting animals in the Long Unai area, Belaga,” he said.

“The suspect will be remanded for further investigation,” Stanley added.
