MIRI: A 36-year-old local man was detained by the police on Monday afternoon on suspicion of stealing engkalak or Borneo Avocados from an orchard at Kampung Kejapil Bekenu.

Miri Police chief ACP Hakemal Hawari said the man was picked up by the police from a house in the same village around 1.30pm.

The arrest was made based on a police report made by the orchard’s owner.

Preliminary investigation also revealed that the suspect had not only harvested the engkalak without the knowledge of its owner but had also cut down at least three of the fruit trees. The incident happened early this month.

The incident was discovered by the owner’s relatives who later alerted him. The orchard owner suffered a total estimated loss of around RM700.

The case is being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code for stealing.
