Man arrested, police seize illicit fags and fireworks

Various types of duty-not-paid cigarettes and fireworks were seized by Bau CID yesterday.

BAU: The district’s Criminal Investigation Division (CID) arrested a local man and seized various types of contraband along Jalan Bau-Kuching, Industrial Shop yesterday.

Bau OCPD DSP Poge Nyaon said the raid codenamed ‘Op Kontraban’ was carried out towards an eatery around 2.15pm.

Inspections led to the finding of several boxes of cigarettes and fireworks believed to be uncustomed, kept in the back of the premises.

“As a result, the team arrested a 29-year-old man believed to be the premises keeper for investigation.

“They also seized 15 types of duty-not-paid cigarettes and 12 types of duty-not-paid fireworks as evidence,” he said.

All of the case items were then taken to the Chemistry Department and Customs Department to be analysed.

Poge said the suspect who did not have any priors, will be investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967 and Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1957.

If convicted under the Customs Act 1967, the suspect can be fined up to 10 times the value of seizure or RM100,000.

While under the Explosives Act 1957, the suspect is liable to a maximum jail term of seven years or, a RM10,000 fine or, both, if convicted.
