KUCHING: A man was charged at the Magistrate’s Court here with the murder of his grandmother in her house at Kampung Rampangi, Samariang here on Sept 21.
The accused, Azizan Zainal, 27, appeared before Magistrate Zubaidah Sharkawi on Monday (Sept 28) at Kuching High Court, Petra Jaya.
The accused nodded in understanding after the charge under Section 302 of the Penal Code was read to him.
During the proceeding, the prosecution requested a new date for trial as the chemistry and post-mortem reports have yet to be completed.
The court set Oct 28 for re-mention and the accused, who will be facing a mandatory death sentence, is further detained pending the date.
According to acting Kuching district police chief Supt Merbin Lisa, Dara Mohamad, 66, was found dead by her sibling in her house on Sept 21.
The victim was believed to have been murdered by the accused around 11.30pm on Sept 20 after they had a misunderstanding regarding money.
Azizan used a sharp weapon, believed to be a knife, to attack his grandmother before fleeing to an abandoned house.
In another courtroom, the accused was found guilty for offenses under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
Magistrate Mohd Syukri Mokhtar ordered that the accused to be fined RM2,000 or jailed for three months if he failed to pay the fine, and be placed under the supervision of police for two years.
