Man detained for suspected theft in Masja

KUCHING: Police here confirmed the arrest of a local man who was suspected of committing theft at a construction site in Masja area recently.

Kuching District police chief ACP Ahsmon Bajah said the incident, which happened on Aug 19, had gone viral in a 14-second video uploaded to Facebook.

He also confirmed that the suspect, who was apprehended by the public, has been handed over to the police.

However, claims saying that the suspect was beaten up during the apprehension were untrue as there was no information that showed the suspect was beaten.

“The 30-year-old suspect is currently under remand until Aug 24 to facilitate investigations under Section 379 of the Penal Code.

“If convicted, the suspect can be sentenced to seven years in jail or be fined, or both,” he said.

Ahsmon also reminded the public to not create any wild speculation about any incidents.
