SIBU: As an active Rotarian, Jeffrey Yong Teck Chin has contributed up to $100,000 — more than RM400,000 — to charity.

Speaking at a welcoming dinner organised by the Rotary Club of Sibu on Friday night, Yong who is an engineer by profession, said he is a Major Donor (Level 4) benefactor due to his contributions.

Yong is the current District Governor (DG) of Rotary District 3310.

“I am not a rich person. I am only rich in giving back to society to help the less fortunate,” he said.

Hailing from Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam, Yong was joined by his wife, Betty Wong, and one of his two daughters at the dinner.

In highlighting how much he had contributed to society, he said it was to show that those who joined the Rotary Club must be willing to serve voluntarily and not to gain fame.

“Rotary is a service organisation. We need community-minded people to join us,” he said.

As the first DG from Brunei, he wanted Rotary Club of Sibu to organise more meaningful projects to inspire people to do community work.

“Get your family members to join in your activities as we are living in an Internet world where people are interacting less now,” he added.

President of Sibu Rotary Club, Stephen Wong, assured that his club will remain committed in doing community work for the betterment of society.

This is also in line with Rotary’s theme for the 2019/2020 term entitled “Rotary Connects the World”, he said.

Wong highlighted that they joined up with OCBC Bank in donating RM20,000 worth of equipment for sensory rooms in Agape Centre.

“We are also working closely with Sibu Hospital to get patients who had corrective cleft palate surgery to do their follow-ups. Our club will provide financial aid to these patients from the rural areas,” he said.
