Man faking datukship released on bail

KUCHING: A man from Kampung Tebakang Bidayuh who had used and enjoyed the Darjah Paduka Mahkota Palembang title bearing the title “Datuk” was released on bail of RM1,500 with two local sureties on Tuesday (May 18).

Riben was charged under Section 12 (2) of the Offences Related to Orders Act 2017 which is punishable under Section 12 (3) of the same Act which is punishable by imprisonment for up to three years upon conviction.

He had introduced himself as “Datuk Riben” to a complainant in the case at Odin Synergy Sdn Bhd at Riveredge Commercial Centre, Jalan Tun Abdul Rahman Yaakub in August 2019.

The complainant then checked via email to the Prime Minister’s Office and the Chief Minister’s Office to obtain confirmation and records to ascertain the position and status of the accused’s honorific title but found that no record of the accused having received any honorific title from any party.

Thus, the accused had allegedly used and enjoyed the honorific title illegally and falsely. 

Prosecuting for the case was ASP Rogayah Rosli while the accused was represented by lawyer Wejok Tomik assisted by Bartolomew Lopez.
