KUCHING: A local man was fined RM1,500 in default one month jail for selling unlicensed public lotteries in a cafe in Stutong.

Magistrate Zaiton Anuar meted out the sentence on Peter Lanie, 28, from Samariang after he pleaded guilty to a charge framed under Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953.

Lanie was charged with selling public lottery tickets without a licence in a cafe in Stutong around 3.55pm on March 24.

Based on the facts of the case, a police team from Kuching Criminal Investigation Department (CID) conducted a raid at the cafe as it was believed to be involved in an unlicensed gambling activity.

Inspections led to the arrest of the accused with seizure of an equipment suspected of being used to sell the illegal lottery tickets. The accused’s belongings were also confiscated and messages on his phone contained numbers of the unlicensed lottery tickets and cash amounting to RM50.
