Man fined RM3k for damaging friend’s iPhone

KUCHING: A local man was sentenced with RM3,000 fine or six months in jail in default by the Magistrate’s Court here today for damaging his friend’s iPhone by smashing it onto the road and putting it in hot boiling water.

Accused Krishnan Joseph Russell Johnson, 32, pleaded guilty to the second charge which was read before Magistrate Zaiton Anuar.

According to the second charge sheet, he was charged under Section 427 of the Penal Code for deliberately damaging the phone belonging to the 32-year-old victim, causing a loss of RM3,500.

He committed the offence in a restaurant at Jalan Ban Hock here at about 12.30 midnight on November 19.

Whereas, for the first charge, he pleaded not guilty for intentionally causing injury to the same victim in the same reported incident.

He was charged under Section 325 of the Penal Code which carries a prison sentence of up to seven years and can be fined, if convicted.

The court then allowed the accused to be released on cash bail of RM2,000 with a local surety for the first charge.

Zaiton then set a date for the case management to be mentioned again on January 3 next year.
