KUCHING: A local man was sentenced to eight years in prison and ordered to be given one stroke of the cane by the Sessions Court here after pleading guilty to robbery.

Judge Dayang Ellyn Narisa Abang Ahmad on Tuesday sentenced Chong Liang Hung, 47, who had previously pleaded not guilty and claimed trial on charges under Section 394 of the Penal Code.

According to the charge, he was accused of robbing a Toyota Hilux four-wheel-drive vehicle belonging to a 53-year-old woman, injuring her in the process before fleeing with the vehicle in March last year.

Chong was charged with committing the offence at a supermarket in Batu Kawa, here, at about 4.25pm on March 21, 2021, punishable with imprisonment of up to 20 years and caning upon conviction.

The court ordered the accused to serve his jail term starting Tuesday.

The court heard that during the incident, the victim was in her vehicle in a parking area near Batu Kawa when she was threatened at knifepoint by the accused who entered from the passenger side of the vehicle.

The accused instructed the victim to start the car engine before pushing her out and fleeing with the vehicle along with a handbag containing important documents and a mobile phone.

The victim suffered injuries to her right knee as a result of falling from the vehicle.
