Man gets nine years for raping teenager

SIBU: A 44-year-old man was today (Nov 4) sentenced to nine years’ imprisonment by the Sessions Court here for raping a teenage girl.

Sessions Court Judge Jason Juga found Sia Kee Chong from Jalan Delta, Kanowit, guilty of the offence after a full trial.
He also ordered the accused to be given two strokes of the rattan.

In addition, Jason also directed the accused to undergo rehabilitative counselling during his imprisonment and to undergo police supervision for one year after his release.

According to the charge sheet, Sia had committed rape on a teenage girl at Taman Tugu Emma, Jalan Kubu in Kanowit at about 5.50am on January 29, 2020.

The offence was framed under Section 376(1) of the Penal Code which upon conviction, provides for a jail term which may extend to 20 years as well as liable to whipping.

The prosecution was represented by deputy public prosecutor Rex Heng Yi Min while the accused was represented by a defence counsel.

The case was first mentioned on March 4, 2020 when Sia pleaded not guilty to the charge. He was subsequently released on RM4,000 bail with two local sureties and to report at the nearest police station once every two weeks.
