Man gets RM3,500 fine for methamphetamine possession

KUCHING: A 23-year-old man was fined RM3,500, in default seven months’ imprisonment, by the Magistrates’ Court here on Thursday (23 June) for possessing 1.38g of methamphetamine.

Magistrate Zaiton Anuar passed the sentence on Selhapis Conia Pori after the charge was read out in front of him.

According to the charge, he was alleged to have in his possession the prohibited substance in a house at Kampung Mambong here at about 4pm, June 13, 2021.

The accused committed an offence under Section 12 (2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and can be punished under Section 12 (3) of the same Act for possession of dangerous drugs.

Upon conviction, he faced a fine not exceeding RM100,000 or imprisonment not exceeding five years or both.

According to the facts of the case, a team from the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department, Padawan arrested the accused suspected of being involved in drug activities in a house.

During inspection, one of the policemen saw the accused throw an object on the side of his seat while being detained.

Further examination found a small rectangular plastic box containing small packets that had been labelled.

The case items were then taken to the Department of Chemistry and a report confirmed that the items contained methamphetamine weighing 1.38g.
