Man gets six months’ imprisonment for drug abuse

KUCHING: A man has been sentenced to six months in jail by the Magistrates’ Court for his involvement in the abuse of methamphetamine and amphetamine drugs last September.

The accused, Joseph Sumbang, 33, from Sungai Apong, pleaded guilty after one charge was read in front of Magistrate Zubaidah Sharkawi.

According to the charge, he was accused of testing positive for drugs when detained by the Narcotics Crime Investigation Division of IPD Kuching at around 3.25pm on Sept 8.

Therefore, the accused was charged under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 (Act 234) and sentenced under the same section.

The offence carries a maximum fine of RM5,000 or imprisonment for up to two years and an immediate requirement to undergo supervision by an officer for a period of not less than two years and not exceeding three years.

Magistrate Zubaidah ordered that the accused be placed under police supervision for two years after serving the jail sentence.

Based on the case facts, an initial urine test of the accused was found to be positive for drugs when detained by the Narcotics Crime Investigation Division of IPD Kuching on Sept 8.

The accused’s urine sample was then taken to the Pathology Department of Sarawak General Hospital, and the report confirmed that the accused tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine drugs.

The prosecution of the case was conducted by deputy public prosecutor Nur Shafiqa Nyaie Ilin while the accused was not represented by a lawyer.
