Man gets two months for stealing chicken

SIBU: A 28-year-old man was today ordered to spend the next two months in prison after he could not pay the RM1,500 fine imposed by the Magistrate’s Court for theft.

Edwin Pangau Mancha, 28, from Jalan Dato Mohd Musa, Kota Samarahan confessed to the charge read and explained to him through an interpreter.

He was charged with stealing a chicken from a house in Sibu Jaya early Feb 28.

Indicted under Section 379 of the Penal Code, the offence provides for a jail term which may extend to seven years or fine or both.

Prosecutor ASP Linggi Tawi told the court that at about 3am on Feb 28, the complainant, 72, heard his chickens squawking.

Upon checking, he found two unknown men stealing his chickens.  He gave chase and managed to apprehend one of them. Police took the suspect and his motorcycle into custody.

In a separate case heard at the same court, a man convicted of criminal intimidation was fined RM6,000 in default, six months’ jail.

Magistrate Punitha Sivaraji found Edward Pasa guilty of the offence after a full trial.

Edward was charged with threatening a 36-year-old woman at a flat quarters of Sibu Hospital with a knife at about 7.20am on July 31, 2020.

The offence listed under Section 506 of the Penal Code carries a jail term which may extend to seven years or fine or both upon conviction.

Three prosecution witnesses and two defence witnesses were called to testify during the trial.

Edward, represented by a legal counsel, pleaded for leniency. He opted to pay the fine.
